It hits you like a meteor — the crushing realization that the person you thought you'd love forever isn't someone you want to be with anymore. Maybe it's something they said or something they did, or it could even be something totally unrelated that simply feels like a sign from the universe.

While we normal folk vaguepost on our Instagram stories, a surprising number of celebrities have shared their "moment I knew" with the entire world. Here are 17 celebrities who revealed the heartbreaking moments they realized their relationships were over:
1. THE RELATIONSHIP: Adele went public with her relationship with entrepreneur Simon Konecki in 2012, and the couple welcomed their son, Angelo, later that year. They eventually married, but split in 2019.

THE REALIZATION: In her special Adele: One Night Only, the singer said that taking a personality quiz in a magazine with her friends helped her realize she wanted to end her marriage. This question in particular struck her: "What's something that no one would ever know about you?" She answered, "I'm really not happy. I'm not living, I'm just plodding along." She said, "They all gasped. From there, I was like, What am I doing? What am I doing it for?"

However, the memory of her father walking out on his family made Adele hesitate. She said, "From a very young age, [I] promised myself that, when I had kids, we'd stay together. And I tried for a really, really long time."

2. THE RELATIONSHIP: Sharon Stone married San Francisco Chronicle journalist Phil Bronstein in 1998. They adopted their son, Roan, in 2000. However, in 2004, the couple divorced.

THE REALIZATION: On the podcast The Person Who Believed in Me, Sharon said that, in the early '00s, doctors found tumors in her breasts. She said, "One of them was bigger than the size of my entire left breast. ... The doctor had come out to my house and said, 'Look, we think you should have a bilateral mastectomy. This is really bad. And we usually, when they're all the way up into here, we know before we go in that they're cancer.'"

A. Nevader / WireImage / Via Getty
Initially in denial, Sharon told her doctor, "I don't have cancer." She continued, "He said, 'You don't get to decide that.' I said, 'I do. I do get to decide that. I'm deciding. But I am deciding that I will have a bilateral, because I'm not fucking around.' My husband said, 'This is ridiculous' and got up and left the room."

Paul Hawthorne / WireImage / Via Getty
She claimed he was "furious" that she "would have a bilateral [mastectomy]" and that he wasn't worried the tumors could be life-threatening. She said that he was "mad about the breasts being removed." Allegedly, the doctor told him, "If I had more patients like her, we'd have more women alive today. You need to sit down." Sharon continued, "And I said, 'I make the decisions, not you.' ... That was the end of the marriage. That was it. He was done with me then. It was over. He thought I was ridiculous. He thought I was foolish. He thought I was making too many decisions myself."

3. THE RELATIONSHIP: Christina Applegate and Johnathon Schaech started dating in 1997 and then got married in 2001. However, four years later, they separated. Their divorce was finalized in 2007.

THE REALIZATION: In her memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, Christina recalled their wedding, which was "a master class in anal perfectionism" and "choreographed within an inch of its life." She wrote, "But that wasn't the worst thing. The worst thing was the moment I walked around the corner and into the ceremony. One of my favorite songs was playing, and when I looked hard at the face of my husband-to-be, I thought, 'Oh fuck. Fuck, oh fuck.'"

Joe Buissink / WireImage / Via Getty
She continued, "I kept thinking, 'Don't be that guy. Don't be that guy. Don't be that guy. You're sabotaging. You're sabotaging. You're sabotaging.' Because there I was in my custom gown, the center of this beautiful fucking wedding filled with all the perfect that you could possibly imagine. I knew right then that this was not the man for me."

4. THE RELATIONSHIP: In 1991, Will Smith went to the set of A Different World to meet cast member Jada Pinkett Smith, but he ended up meeting and dating Sheree Zampino instead. The following year, Will and Sheree got married and welcomed their son, Trey. At some point, they had a party where Will met Jada for the first time. He and Sheree divorced in 1995.

THE REALIZATION: Will and Jada truly connected at their friends' event at The Baked Potato jazz club. On Red Table Talk, he said, "The next night, me and Sheree went to dinner, and I sat down with Sheree, and it was one of the most bizarre emotions I ever had after we had that talk. And we were at The Palm, and I remember I had to get up from dinner when I had a realization that I wasn't with the person I was supposed to be with."

Ron Galella, Ltd. / Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images
He continued, "I would've never gotten divorced. ... I went in the bathroom at The Palm, and I broke down in tears. And I was sitting in a stall in the restaurant, and I was crying uncontrollably and then laughing, like, 'What the heck is wrong with me?' I was crying and laughing, and it's like, I knew that was the woman I was supposed to be with, but I was never getting divorced. I don't get divorced. ... It was never gonna happen, and I just had to get my gangsta back together. And I got myself together, went back out, and sat down with Sheree and started going back on with my life."

Ron Galella, Ltd. / Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images
"Sheree filed for divorce. She hit me hard. Sheree filed for divorce on Valentine's Day. ... I still told her, 'No. You can't have a divorce.' And she hit me with the, 'So you're gonna make somebody stay with you who doesn't love you?' And I was like, 'I'm actually not. No, I'm not.' And that was the one that got me. I remember, I was like, 'I'mma sign the divorce papers.' I walked outta there, and I was in the car, and I had Jada's number. I literally walked right out from there. I called Jada," he said.

5. THE RELATIONSHIP: Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis first hit it off at a Saturday Night Live finale party in 2011. However, they didn't exchange contact information then or at any other point they ran into each other over the next six months. Finally, her friend gave him her number, and a month later, he texted her. By the next year, they were living together, and at the start of 2013, they got engaged. The couple welcomed their son in 2014 and their daughter in 2016. However, they never made it down the aisle, and in 2020, they called their engagement off.

THE REALIZATION: On the podcast Call Her Daddy, Olivia said, "Jason and I had been having a rough time there for a while. We had a real bumpy, bumpy ride, and we were driving home from my birthday party my friends had had, and I said, 'Did you give me a birthday present?' And he said, 'What would I get you, Olivia? I don't know you.' And he wasn't wrong. We didn't know each other anymore."

Walter McBride / Getty Images
The moment spurred her to make The Invite. She said, "This is the thing that made me wanna make this movie because — or one of the things — because you can get to a place in a relationship where you stop engaging in the knowing of each other, in the curiosity about each other, and you find yourself in a place where you're like, 'I don't even know you.' And that was a point, that was when we realized it was over. And it was fucking tough, and it brought us to the place of like, okay, this is done. We're gonna end this."

Steve Granitz / WireImage / Via Getty
6. THE RELATIONSHIP: In 2003, One Tree Hill costars Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray fell in love on set. The following year, they got engaged in Australia and then married in Santa Monica. However, only five months into the marriage, they separated. Sophia tried to get an annulment, citing fraud, but they ultimately divorced in 2006.

Steve Granitz / WireImage / Via Getty
THE REALIZATION: In her memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine, Sophia said that, a mere two days after tying the knot, she left to go film movies back-to-back. She wrote, "When it was too loud to ignore, I made a phone call [to Chad's friend/groomsman]. It had always bothered me that one of his best friends had fallen mysteriously ill the night before the [wedding] day and not shown up to stand up there as a groomsman. Thinking about it that summer gave me the chills. I needed to know why."

James Devaney / WireImage / Via Getty
On the phone, the friend sighed, asking why she hadn't called him sooner. She continued, "And then he told me. Everything he could about all the girls he knew of. Girls I knew and plenty of girls I didn't. The number and the details are not important now. But at the time, they were shocking. Unimaginable, really. And brutal. Including the fact that another woman was living in my spouse's house in LA when I had met him in North Carolina. Not a batshit-crazy ex who'd shown up unannounced at all. Another partner. So much for the cute single guy at work. ... I finally understood why, at our rehearsal dinner, his father asked my mother if the female costar from Australia had been invited to the wedding and laughed when I'd responded, 'No, she's nice, but they're not that close.' I realized in the moment why he chuckled and looked at the floor then."

Jeff Kravitz / FilmMagic, Inc / Via Getty
"You all know the rest, more or less. I went back to work. I changed the locks. And I dealt with the most searing humiliation I'd ever felt. It was tabloid fodder and fuel for cruel jokes. All over the world, in multiple languages. It was made into a punchline, a marketing hook for radio ads to promote our show," she said.

Chad's reps didn't respond to E! News' request for comment at the time.
7. THE RELATIONSHIP: 20-year-old Taylor Swift and 29-year-old Jake Gyllenhaal were first spotted together backstage at Saturday Night Live after Emma Stone hosted the show in late October 2010. During their brief romance, they spent Thanksgiving together and were seen around NYC, Nashville, and LA. However, in December, Jake was noticeably absent from Taylor's Christmas-themed 21st birthday party. Less than a week later, he turned 30, and she wasn't there. Their breakup was confirmed a few days into the new year.

THE REALIZATION: Taylor's Red bonus track "The Moment I Knew" is widely speculated to be about Jake. The song recalls a birthday party where the singer keeps watching the door because her partner promised he'd be there, but when she realizes he's not going to show up, she ends up crying in front of everyone. Telling lyrics include, "And it was like slow motion / Standing there in my party dress / In red lipstick / With no one to impress / And they're all laughing / And asking me about you / But there was one thing missing / And that was the moment I knew."

8. THE RELATIONSHIP: The Last Song costars Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth fell in love on set in 2009. The couple dated on and off until 2012, when they got engaged. They called it off after a year, but that wasn't the end of the story! In 2016, they got back together and got re-engaged. In 2018, the couple lost their home in the California wildfires. They secretly got married two days before Christmas, but less than a year later, they separated. Their divorce was finalized in 2020.

THE REALIZATION: Miley realized it was over when she headlined Glastonbury in 2019. In her Used to Be Young TikTok series, she said, "Glastonbury was in June, which was when the decision happened that me and Liam's commitment to being married just really came from, of course, a place of love first — because we'd been together for 10 years — but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could. The day of the show was the day I had decided that it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship."

"That was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first. And I guess now that's why it's so important to me for me to not be the case, that the human comes first," she added.

9. THE RELATIONSHIP: Rumer Willis and Derek Richard Thomas went public with their relationship in 2022. Then, less than a month later, they announced Rumer's pregnancy. Their daughter, Louetta, was born in 2023. However, a little over a year later, Rumer announced that they'd broken up.

Gilbert Flores / WWD via Getty Images
THE REALIZATION: On the podcast The Inside Edit, Rumer told host Maeve Reilly (who's also her best friend), "Your wedding [in June 2024] literally was a huge reckoning moment for me in my life. I heard your vows, and I just realized that the situation I was in was never going to look like that, no matter how much effort I put in. And I was just watching you guys, just weeping, holding my child, and I just thought, 'You know what? I need to have more value for myself. I need to go and, like, leave, no matter how scared I am, and find something that looks like this, because I want that.' Literally, it was such a huge reckoning and massive moment for me, so I will always be grateful."

She added, "I try not to speak negatively, but my truth is that [the relationship] was really brutal and challenging. And I'm so proud of myself, you know? I work really hard, and I show up for my kid, and it's such a privilege. It's such a privilege to be a mom. It makes me so happy."

10. THE RELATIONSHIP: When 98 Degrees played at the Hollywood Christmas Parade in 1998, Nick Lachey met fellow pop star Jessica Simpson. He spent the rest of the night searching the crowd for her, but they didn't cross paths again until a party a month later. They quickly became a couple, but in 2001, they broke up. However, after the tragic events of 9/11, Jessica realized she wanted to be with Nick, and they got back together. In 2002, they got engaged and then, a few months later, married. In 2005, Jessica had an "emotional affair" with Johnny Knoxville, her costar from The Dukes of Hazzard. Later that year, she and Nick announced their separation. They officially divorced in 2006.

Jeff Kravitz / FilmMagic / Via Getty
THE REALIZATION: Nick told Rolling Stone, "I'll tell you how I knew my marriage was over – I was told. I'd marry her all over again because I still love her. It would be a lot easier to walk away if I didn't."

Vinnie Zuffante / Getty Images
However, Jessica had a different perspective. She told Jane magazine, "I went [to Kenya with Operation Smile] on our three-year wedding anniversary. He stayed home. On that day, everything became so clear. I was in hospitals with all these sick kids. I just knew I needed to find something more in my life, on my own."

11. THE RELATIONSHIP: Cardi B and Offset got married in his bedroom in 2017, but they kept their nuptials secret for a long time. In 2018, they announced Cardi's first pregnancy. Soon after, they revealed that they'd been husband and wife all along! They welcomed three children together, but their on-and-off relationship was rocked by cheating scandals. (Offset has admitted to infidelity.) Cardi announced her third pregnancy and her decision to file for divorce in 2024, but their split has not been finalized yet.

Jeff Kravitz / Getty Images for MTV
THE REALIZATION: On the podcast On Purpose With Jay Shetty, Cardi said, "I also felt like my marriage, like, I felt the love dying. From my end, from his end. I was very lonely, because I chose to be lonely. I was saying, 'Like, you know what? I [can't] go through this anymore. I have to put a stop to it.' But when I said I was going to put a stop to it, 'cause you could say you’re going to put a stop to it, and you could go a month without being around somebody. It's not until...when you say so; it's when your heart says so. I kept telling myself I will not contact this person for a month. I will not give in. I will not forgive this easy. I will not go back. I will not go to the pattern. I will not go through it."

Lionel Hahn / Getty Images
She continued, "But I was crying every day. I was hurt every day. I was out here in LA in a mansion by myself. I was thinking about it every single day. And when your heart is not done, your heart is not done. Then I told myself, 'I'm pregnant. I'm going to accept my flaws, the flaws that I bring in this marriage. I'm going to apologize for it, and I'm going to work on it.' ... And when I take accountability, and you take advantage of me taking accountability, and you take that as a, 'See, I know she'd be back,' instead of me taking accountability, and you taking advantage of that, it really just killed everything."

MICHAEL TRAN / AFP via Getty Images
"I had a human growing in me, and I just kept thinking, like, what's life going to be without this person? What's life going to be without raising my last child without this person? What's life going to be with that person not being my friend anymore? Without nothing. When you have those type of thoughts, it will make you sad; it will get you depressed. It will have you lost. But I overcame that, and I am the strongest that I have ever been. ... And it took months for the heart to say, 'You're done,' instead of my mouth and my brain. My heart had to be like, 'You're done.' 'Cause you could say it, and you could take actions, but even if you take actions, if you're not done, you're not done. It took some crying; it took some thoughts, scary thoughts. But I'm here," she said.

12. THE RELATIONSHIP: Honeymoon in Vegas costars Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker briefly dated in the '90s (a longstanding rumor he confirmed in 2025).

Ron Galella, Ltd. / Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images
THE REALIZATION: Nicolas told E! News, "I cared about Sarah, but I don't think I passed the Mom test. I recall sitting down with her and her mother for dinner at the Russian Tea Room, and I don't know if it was my blue Vanson Leather motorcycle jacket (which I still have) or my sinusitis, but I didn't hear from her again."

13. THE RELATIONSHIP: Gwyneth Paltrow first met Chris Martin backstage at a Coldplay concert in 2002. A little over a year later, they announced that Gwyneth was expecting their first child, and two days later, they secretly got married. Their daughter, Apple, was born in 2004, and their son, Moses, was born two years later. Then, in 2014, Gwyneth and Chris Martin announced their "conscious uncoupling." Their divorce was finalized in 2015.

Kevin Mazur / Via Getty
THE REALIZATION: In an essay for British Vogue, Gwyneth wrote, "It was my birthday, my 38th. My ex-husband and I were tucked away in the Tuscan countryside, on a hill in a beautiful cottage with a view of the forest. Fall was coming; the leaves were just loosening their grip on bright green. Inside, the cottage was perfectly appointed in the way you dream of for a birthday trip: cozy living room with a fireplace, kitchen table overflowing with spoils from the farm nearby – peaches, tomatoes on the vine, basil, eggs. I don't recall when it happened, exactly. I don't remember which day of the weekend it was or the time of day. But I knew – despite long walks and longer lie-ins, big glasses of Barolo and hands held – my marriage was over."

Charley Gallay / Getty Images for Entertainment Industry Foundation
She continued, "What I do remember is that it felt almost involuntary, like the ring of a bell that has sounded and cannot be undone. The inadvertent release of a helium balloon into the sky. I tried to quell that knowing, to push it far down. I tried to convince myself it had been a fleeting thought, that marriage is complicated and ebbed and flowed. But I knew it. It was in my bones. At first, I was moderately successful at turning the volume down on that knowledge. It would be years until we said the words aloud. But, that weekend, a dam had cracked just enough to hear the unrelenting trickle of truth. And it grew louder until it was all I could hear."

Ivan Romano / Getty Images
She said they were "close" but "had never fully settled into being a couple." She continued, "Between the day that I knew and the day we finally relented to the truth, we tried everything. We did not want to fail. We didn't want to let anyone down. We desperately didn't want to hurt our children. We didn't want to lose our family. The questions, both philosophical and tactical, seemed unfathomable: who sleeps where, how does bath time work, what do we say to the kids? I bent myself into every imaginable shape to avoid answering them. But one day, despite all our efforts, I found that I was not at a fork in the road. I was well down a path. Almost without realizing it, we had diverged. We'd never find ourselves together in that way again."

14. THE RELATIONSHIP: In 2006, Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan fell in love on the set of Step Up. Two years later, they got engaged in Hawaii, and in 2009, they got married in Malibu. In 2013, Jenna gave birth to their daughter, Everly. But then, in 2018, the couple announced their separation. Their divorce was finalized the next year.

Greg Doherty / Getty Images
THE REALIZATION: Becoming parents made Channing and Jenna realize they weren't the right match. He told Vanity Fair, "We fought for it for a really long time, even though we both sort of knew that we had sort of grown apart. I think we told ourselves a story when we were young, and we just kept telling ourselves that story, no matter how blatantly life was telling us that we were so different. But when you're actually parents, you really understand differences between the two of you. Because it is screaming at you all day long. How you parent differently, how you look at the world, how you go through the world."

Samir Hussein / WireImage / Via Getty
He continued, "In the beginning, [the separation] was super scary and terrifying. Your life just turns on its axis. This whole plan that you had literally just turns into sand and goes through your fingers, and you're just like, 'Oh, shit. What now?' It was probably exactly what I needed. I don't think I would've ever done the work, I think, on myself in the way that I had to do the work on myself to really try to figure out what next. And really, it just started with my daughter. I just dropped everything and just focused on her. And it was truly the best possible thing that I ever could have done. Because in the alone time that I have with just me and her, we've become best friends."

Naomi Rahim / WireImage / Via Getty
15. THE RELATIONSHIP: Tori Spelling was married to Charlie Shahnaian when she costarred with Dean McDermott (who was married to Mary Jo Eustace) in the 2005 TV movie Mind Over Murder. Tori and Dean "had sex the first night [they] met" while filming in Ottawa in 2005. Shortly after their respective divorces, they exchanged vows in 2006. Together, they had five children — Liam, Stella, Hattie, Finn, and Beau. However, Dean had a brief affair in 2013, and the couple eventually divorced in 2024.

Rodin Eckenroth / Getty Images
THE REALIZATION: On the podcast misSPELLING, Tori revealed she'd been wanting to file for divorce for "like…15 years" because, once their kids entered the picture, their "relationship was never the same." She said, "Everything became focused on the kids, and I kind of left him in a way. And I get it. It doesn't excuse his behavior and everything he did. We always say, 'Hey, it made it 18 years.' It shouldn't have made it 18 years. And I think he would say the same thing if he and I had a real heart-to-heart. It would have been over a lot sooner."

Andrew J Cunningham / Getty Images
She waited so many years to finally end the marriage because she wanted to "protect" Dean and the kids from getting hurt.

Steve Granitz / FilmMagic / Via Getty
16. THE RELATIONSHIP: Fashion designer and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast member Rachel Zoe met Rodger Berman at George Washington University in 1991. Seven years later, they tied the knot. The couple welcomed their first son, Skyler, in 2011 and their second son, Kaius, in 2013. However, in 2024, they announced their divorce, which was finalized the following year.

Jon Kopaloff / Getty Images for ABA
THE REALIZATION: When Zoe began "to question decisions," she realized that she and Rodger didn't see eye to eye "on what certain outcomes should be." She told People, "I started to feel like this may not be the most advantageous situation for our children. For me, for the last 14 years, literally every breath I take is for my kids. So every decision I make, every lens that I look through is through a lens of my children, of what are they going to think? What are they going to say? How will this affect them? I have never felt that people should live together and stay together unhappy."

Gilbert Carrasquillo / GC Images / Via Getty
She continued, "I think if you ask any woman who has left a situation, they would probably say that they probably should have done it sooner. But it is what it is. At the end of the day, I ultimately did what's best for the kids. I think that having two parents that love them is more important than having two parents together that maybe shouldn't be together anymore."

17. And finally, THE RELATIONSHIP: Stevie Nicks met Lindsey Buckingham at a party in high school. He was playing guitar and singing "California Dreamin'," and she walked right up and started harmonizing with him. They introduced themselves, but they didn't see each other again until two years later, when he called her up and asked her to join his band. They started dating and making music as the duo Buckingham Nicks. In 1975, the couple joined Fleetwood Mac, but they broke up two years later.

Richard E. Aaron / Redferns / Via Getty
Their split was immortalized through tracks they both penned for the band's 1977 breakout album, Rumours. However, Stevie's magnum opus, "Silver Springs," was cut from the tracklist without her input and relegated to the B-side of their single "Go Your Own Way" (which was Lindsey's POV of the split). But in 1997, the band resurrected "Silver Springs" for their live album The Dance. They recorded a live performance of the song with Lindsey on guitar. It's become one of Fleetwood Mac's most enduring songs, proving Stevie's lyrics to be true: "You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you."

Gie Knaeps / Getty Images
THE REALIZATION: In 1998, Lindsey and his now-wife, Kristen Messner, welcomed their son, William. Stevie told MTV News that she knew her romance with Lindsey was officially over for good "the day his first child was born." She said, "I knew that was it ... that was the definitive thing."
