Aaron Boone's George Lombard Jr. update is somewhat concerning for Yankees

New York Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr. has sat out the past two games with right knee inflammation.

The rookie tweaked his knee with an awkward check swing on Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, but there was no structural damage.

For now, the Yankees have Lombard listed as day-to-day. The 21-year-old has been running in the outfield while the Yankees visit the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.

However, on today's episode of Talkin' Yanks, Boone did not rule out a trip to the injured list for the shortstop.

"Aaron Boone tells us George Lombard Jr. will not be in the lineup tonight, but he ran and took ground balls yesterday," Talkin' Yanks wrote on X. "Boone does not anticipate an IL stint, but wouldn't rule it out."

The last part of the second sentence is what should concern Yankees fans. Boone didn't say for sure that Lombard would avoid an injured list stint.

If Lombard has to go on the IL, it's likely the Yankees would promote Anthony Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Before the injury, Lombard committed six errors in six games and went 1-for-7 with a walk and two strikeouts in the Red Sox series.

Reliever John Schreiber, who was recently claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals, and third baseman Ryan McMahon will be activated for tonight's middle game against the Angels.

McMahon has been out for nearly two weeks with a Grade 2 sprain in his thumb.
