Bernie Kosar’s private work with Shedeur Sanders may pay off as Browns hold every QB

The Cleveland Browns are keeping Shedeur Sanders, and a franchise icon has been quietly getting him ready for whenever his number is called.

Bernie Kosar, Cleveland’s quarterback from 1985 to 1993, told local sports host Garrett Bush that he has been training with Sanders away from the cameras. Bush recounted the exchange in a clip shared on X by Change7he Narrative, relaying Kosar’s message:

“I’ve been out here putting that work in. I’m telling you, when you get a chance to see him, he going to be dynamic.”

Bush asked why a Browns legend vouching for Sanders as a future starter hasn’t drawn more attention.

The roster math matters here. Cleveland activated Dillon Gabriel off injured reserve Monday and found room for all four quarterbacks, rookie Taylen Green included, by waiving seventh-round tight end Carsen Ryan.

Deshaun Watson’s Hot Streak Keeps Shedeur Sanders Waiting Despite Kosar’s Backing

Deshaun Watson has given coach Todd Monken no reason to reconsider since winning the job in August. He threw for 308 yards in the 27-24 win at the Tennessee Titans, his first 300-yard game as a Brown, before kicker Andre Szmyt settled it with a 32-yard field goal. Watson has authored a game-winning drive in all five victories, and Cleveland leads the AFC North via tiebreaker.

Those numbers come from a quarterback who hadn’t played since October 2024, when the first of his two Achilles injuries occurred. He’s also in the last year of a five-year, $230 million contract.

Owner Jimmy Haslam labeled extension talk way premature last week, though the club reportedly remains open to Watson starting in 2027. One recent take projected that Sanders’ opportunity may not arrive until that season.

Sanders, a fifth-round pick at No. 144 overall in 2025, went 3-4 across seven rookie starts. His decision to hire an agent earlier in October fueled trade speculation, yet he framed the QB room differently when speaking with Kosar in August: “Everybody’s goal is aligned here. That’s why we don’t have the petty quarterback battles internally.”

Kosar, honored with Bernie Kosar Day on Oct. 13 to mark the 41st anniversary of his first regular-season start, told Yahoo Sports Daily in September he had “really loved” Sanders’ growth. The agent move and the team-first message fit together. Sanders is protecting his future while doing a backup’s job, and Watson’s health will decide when that preparation gets tested.
