Blue Jays made right Bo Bichette decision after latest Mets report on infielder

When the Toronto Blue Jays decided to move on from star shortstop Bo Bichette, it was met with some skepticism.

It was obvious why the Blue Jays did so, at least in the simple sense that they didn't want to pay him as much as he was asking. Bichette ended up signing a somewhat ridiculous contract with the New York Mets, earning $126 million over three years.

He also got two player options after each season, making it a deal that would have been tough to pass up.

As for whether Toronto made the right decision in moving on from Bichette, that's not something we can determine yet, though early returns suggest it did what it was supposed to do.

According to a report, if Bichette opts out of his deal with the Mets, he's very unlikely to get more than his $42 million AAV.

That alone shows that the Blue Jays might have made the right decision if they weren't willing to give him a contract in that same ballpark.

“If he opts out, Bichette will find it impossible to eclipse his current deal’s $42 million average annual value. Even if he does wish to opt out for non-financial reasons, Bichette can still do so a year from now at age 29, presumably off a better platform season. For all those reasons, he is likely to stay. Bichette’s decision is due five days after the World Series ends,” Anthony DiComo wrote.

It's always tough to get a feel for contracts like this for a guy who has led the American League twice in hits and has frankly been one of the better offensive infielders in baseball for much of his career.

However, Bichette has other problems as a player, which were evident in New York this past season.
