Colts get unfortunate report on special teams coach Brian Mason after preseason injury

The Indianapolis Colts played their first preseason game on Thursday night against the New England Patriots. They tied 13-13, and right at the end of the game, a serious-looking injury occurred.

But it wasn't a player that got hurt. It was a member of the Colts' coaching staff, special teams coordinator Brian Mason. He was knocked down on the sidelines when players ran into him finishing a play. Mason was clearly in pain.

The next day, James Boyd of The Athletic reported that Mason is believed to have suffered some brutal knee injuries, with multiple torn ligaments in his knee following this freak accident.

"Colts STC Brian Mason is believed to have suffered multiple torn ligaments in his knee, a league source confirms to @TheAthleticNFL," Boyd reports.

Mason was collided into by players finishing a play and went down to the ground, clearly in pain. The broadcast captured the incident, which Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team shared on Twitter/x.

It's not a good-looking injury, with Mason writhing on the ground after the collision, clearly in a lot of pain. Now, with this report from Boyd, it seems pretty clear why he was in such pain.

The Colts special teams coordinator is now banged up, and there might be some questions about his availability going forward.

Boyd reported that there is some uncertainty about Mason going forward when it comes to coaching, but the Colts haven't made any decisions yet.

He could be back for the preseason game next week, or maybe for the regular season. But regardless of his return, the fourth-year special teams coordinator has a serious knee injury to deal with.

This might be a big story for the Colts if Mason can't return right away, and their special teams suffer because of it.

Hopefully Mason is able to get back to coaching soon, as this upcoming season is a very important one for the Colts after their second-half meltdown last year.
