"Do You Know Something We Don't?": Ryan Gosling's Long-Dormant Band Might Be Rising From The Dead Just In Time For Halloween

What does Eva Mendes know that we don't?
On Wednesday, October 21, the actor shared an Instagram post featuring a gothic-inspired video by artist Fiona Florence, set to a song by Dead Man's Bones, the cult-favorite band formed by her husband, Ryan Gosling, and musician Zach Shields.
But it was the caption that sent fans into a frenzy. "Fiona Florence's spooky beauty to one of my favorite song," she wrote, before adding that it "wouldn't be the spooky season without DEAD MAN'S BONES." Then came the suspicious final line: "Sure wish they had new music coming out..."
For a band that hasn't released an album in 17 years (since their self-debut and only album dropped in 2009), this hint was more than enough to get people talking.
And Mendes' coy responses to fans only fueled speculation that something was happening behind the scenes. "Do you know something we don't?" asked one curious fan. "Maybe I do....." replied Mendes.
In another exchange, a fan wrote, "Eva! Don't play about this! Are you serious!?!?!" to which Mendes replied, "I'm dead serious..."
And in response to a fan urging, "Tell him Eva!!!" Mendes wrote: "Im trying gurl!"
The clues didn't stop with Mendes. As documented by the pop culture community, Oh No They Didn't, Gosling's stylist, Mark Avery, also joined the conversation on Instagram, prompting fans to wonder whether the tip-offs were part of a coordinated release.
"It's that time of year and when spooky dreams can come true," Avery captioned his post.
An October 22 update to the post pointed to another exchange between Avery and fans about Dead Man's Bones that all but confirmed something was brewing. "Might just be some new music about to drop!!" he wrote.
Fans have already started celebrating the possibility of new music. "DO U UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS MEANS?" wrote an X user.
"DON'T PLAY WITH MY EMOTIONS," wrote another excited fan.
Could it also be a coincidence that Dead Man's Bones updated its YouTube page for the first time since 2009 after being featured on the soundtrack of The Boroughs?
For anyone who knows the actor as Ken from Barbie, Ryan Gosling's musical career goes back much farther. In the late 2000s, Gosling (under the name Baby Goose) teamed up with his friend Zach Shields to form Dead Man's Bones, a gothic folk-rock band inspired by the duo's interest in the supernatural and Disney's Haunted Mansion attraction.
Dead Man's Bones released its self-titled debut album on October 6, 2009, featuring the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir.
Mendes has shared her love of Dead Man's Bones in the past, writing in 2023, "Dead Man’s Bones is my favorite band ….when I first heard Ryan sing, MY HEART EXPLODED."
So, is Dead Man's Bones getting ready to rise from the grave after 17 years? If there's ever been a perfect time, it's Halloween.
