The Atlanta Falcons have the most interesting quarterback room in the entire NFL, and no, it is not because of the talent. It is simply because, from week to week, it is hard to tell who is going to be healthy enough to play and who isn’t.
It will be the same this week. Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. are still trying to make their way back from injuries. Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski is leaving the option open for any QB on the roster to start.
“I’d say we’re working through it. I’m not ruling anyone out,” he said. “Tua’s not going to practice today, but he’s getting better. Cooper and Mike will practice today, so we’ll work with it.”
It is not a good place to be in when it is still up in the air who the QB will be in Week 2. That is a sign that things could get ugly. However, Atlanta RB Bijan Robinson may have indirectly revealed Penix’s status for this Sunday.
“I know we're ready to see Mike. I know Mike is ready for himself. Forget what we think. He wants to play football,” Robinson told the media.
This from Robinson might just be the sign Falcons fans have been waiting for, as it looks like Penix could very well play this week. Since Penix has been cleared, Atlanta has been waiting to see when his body would be ready to play.
“The Falcons wanna take a look this week at Michael Penix and see how he responds,” NFL insider Adam Schefter said.
The Falcons as a team are better when Penix is on the field, but it is unclear how he will respond to being on a playing field for the first time in a while. He didn’t compete in preseason games, so he will be fresh out of the box.
While this is no definitive answer from Robinson, it sure sounds like Penix is going to be the starter if he is ready to give it a go. With Penix, the passing game reaches a good spot for Atlanta.
