Guardians’ walk-off win turns AL Central into final-day caliber race

Brayan Rocchio needed one swing to erase a Chicago White Sox lead and transform the American League Central race.

Rocchio delivered a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday, giving the Cleveland Guardians a dramatic 7-6 victory. The comeback pulled Cleveland within one-half game of first-place Chicago. With fewer than two weeks remaining, the division race has become almost impossible to separate.

Chicago is 77-74. Cleveland is 77-75. The Guardians also needed the victory because the White Sox already own the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Cleveland overcame another late Chicago surge

Rookie Travis Bazzana hit two solo home runs for Cleveland, while Jo Adell added a two-run shot.

The White Sox answered with a four-run sixth inning and carried a 6-5 advantage into the ninth. Chicago was one out away from increasing its division lead before Rocchio doubled home two pinch runners against Grant Taylor.

Cade Smith earned the victory for Cleveland.

The finish mattered beyond one night because Chicago’s tiebreaker advantage effectively adds another obstacle for the Guardians. If the teams finish with identical records, the White Sox would win the division without playing a tiebreaker game.

Cleveland therefore must finish ahead outright.

AL playoff field remains tangled

The Guardians entered the series holding the final AL wild-card position, but Texas and Toronto remain close enough to punish any extended losing streak.

That makes winning the division particularly valuable. The AL Central champion receives a guaranteed postseason spot. The second-place team may be pushed into a crowded race involving multiple clubs with favorable tiebreaker scenarios.

Chicago still controls its outcome.

Cleveland now has momentum and another direct opportunity to change the standings Wednesday at 1:10 p.m. ET.

September baseball creates urgency through shrinking possibilities. Tuesday’s ninth inning gave the Guardians a path that appeared ready to disappear.
