Lakers, Heat hit with brutal trade update for ex-Warriors' Klay Thompson after mavericks decision

The Dallas Mavericks are still trying to determine what to do with Klay Thompson after he struggled during a down season. With new management in place, the direction the Mavericks take could have a major impact on Thompson’s future with the organization.

Thompson has been involved in discussions surrounding a potential trade or buyout. The Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers are two teams that have emerged as possible destinations if he leaves Dallas.

“My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote.

However, Dallas is not currently looking to agree to a buyout with Thompson, as the franchise still believes he holds value on the trade market.

“To this point Dallas has not been looking to find a buyout agreement with Klay Thompson…the Mavericks have been very hesitant, to my understanding, of actually moving forward and agreeing to a buyout with Klay Thompson," The Stein Line’s JakeFischer said. "This market that is shaping up for him, the fact that there is some L.A. interest, the fact that there is Miami interest, there's probably other teams that have interest in Klay Thompson as well.”

That is where the bad news comes into play for both Miami and Los Angeles. NBA reporter Evan Sidery revealed that Dallas has little interest in the trade packages currently being discussed by either team.

“The Heat and Lakers continue to await a buyout for Klay Thompson. The Mavericks hold little interest in taking on Nikola Jovic or Jarred Vanderbilt’s contracts in potential trade talks with either team. Both teams would likely offer Thompson an immediate starting opportunity,” Sidery wrote.

It is still only August, meaning the situation can change as the offseason progresses. However, with multiple teams showing interest in Thompson, there is little reason for the Mavericks to simply agree to a buyout right now.

The Lakers and Heat may need to improve their offers if they want to acquire Thompson through a trade. For now, neither team is in an ideal position, as Dallas is not interested in a buyout and does not appear willing to accept the trade packages currently being offered.
