Could this be any sweeter? Matthew Perry’s sister revealed a very powerful statement the Friends cast made at her brother’s funeral in Netflix’s new three-part documentary about the late actor titled, The One About Matthew Perry.
“I remember sitting in the front row with my family,” Perry Bowick recalled on the verge of tears. “And then the rest of the Friends cast all walked in together. And I hadn’t seen them in easily 20 years.”
Perry Bowick then revealed which cast member was the first to embrace her. “Jen Aniston was the first one of them to come up to me and give me a huge hug,” she recalled. “But they… they all did.”
Perry Bowick proceeded to choke up and eventually cry while describing what her brother’s former co-stars did next. “And then all five of them walked up to the casket holding hands,” she said as she cried. “And stood around him crying.”
After a very emotional Perry Bowick took a beat, she eventually broke the tension with her next recollection of the likely surreal day. She explained that as her brother’s body was being placed in a mausoleum, she suddenly “felt Matthew with me.”
“And he showed up right behind my right shoulder, and leaned over my shoulder and goes, ‘How fucked up is this?’” Perry Bowick then suddenly cracked up — in the good way. “And I started laughing so hard, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, there he is making me laugh at the most horrible moment,’” she said.
Prior to his death, Perry struggled with substance abuse for decades. In 2022, Perry admitted that Aniston confronted him about his drinking while they were working together on Friends.
“Yeah, imagine how scary of a moment that was,” Perry told Diane Sawyer at the time. “She was the one who reached out the most. I’m really grateful to her for that.”
