Mets have $223.2 million problem for 2027 MLB season

The New York Mets came into the season as World Series hopefuls.

However, things haven't gone their way, and the postseason is not a realistic goal with just one month left in the season.

A major reason for that is the poor play from some of New York's highest-paid players. Injuries also play a role.

And while owner Steve Cohen can flash his money to improve the roster, the Mets owe a large sum of money to players who haven't performed in 2026.

"On a related note, if Bo Bichette doesn't opt out of his contract, the Mets are going to owe a combined $223.1M next season to eight players who have been worth a combined 1.5 bWAR this year," Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote Wednesday.

Bichette, Marcus Semien, and Jorge Polanco did not have productive first years in Queens.

Polanco is out for the season with an ankle injury and played in just 37 games while hitting .148. Polanco is owed $20 million in 2027.

It would be a shock if Bichette opted out of his contract. The two-time All-Star has a .704 OPS and is set to earn $42 million next season.

New York has handed out large contracts that haven't paid off yet. There's still hope that Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor can lead the NL East club back to relevance.

But they'll need much more help from the expensive supporting cast.
