Rangers sign ex-Cardinals 3.99 ERA reliever after release from Marlins

The Texas Rangers are preparing for a final push towards the postseason.

On Tuesday, the AL West club made a new addition to its bullpen.

According to Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News, the Rangers have signed left-hander John King to a minor league contract.

King, 31, was released by the Miami Marlins last week after he posted a 3.99 ERA in 50 appearances.

King's contract with the Rangers was finalized last night, meaning the southpaw would be eligible to play in the postseason.

"King would be a long shot to secure a spot on the playoff roster in either case. The southpaw was released by Miami last week. King had signed with the Fish on a $1.5MM free agent contract and pitched well for the first three months," Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.

"His numbers started to dip in July, and the wheels completely came off in August. King has allowed 13 runs on as many hits with seven walks and three strikeouts across 9 2/3 innings since the All-Star Break."

This will be King's second stint with the Rangers, as he threw 126.1 innings across parts of four seasons with Texas from 2020-23.

The sinkerballer is inducing ground balls at a 46.9% rate, down 12.5% from the previous year. He struck out 33 batters and walked 17 in 49.2 innings with the Marlins.
