The New York Knicks are coming off an NBA championship and know that they will have a target on their backs during the season. However, they didn’t think that they would be dealing with contract issues involving their starting center, Karl-Anthony Towns.
The six-time All-Star is seeking a contract extension, but the organization only has so much it can give. For now, the offer on the table has been $200 million.
“The Knicks have offered KAT around $200 million, league sources confirmed to The Post, which is $77 million less than his max," New York Post's Stefan Bondy wrote.
Towns was a huge part of the Knicks being able to shut down Victor Wembanyama during the Finals. One thing for sure is that the center has been very vocal throughout this entire process. His latest remarks revealed that he hasn’t been offered anything where he felt his value was being met.
“Simply put – I want to do something to keep the team together and can work with the Knicks and also values me. And none of those things are close to happening," Towns said.
If Towns doesn’t get an extension before the regular season starts, it is likely that he could hit free agency next summer. CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn believes that if nothing gets done, the Golden State Warriors would sign him in free agency.
“The (for now) answer to this question is probably Golden State. A Podz extension takes them out of max space territory, but if we reach the summer with KAT as a free agent and Golden State still having the money I bet they'd offer it,” Quinn posted.
This would be a great get for the Warriors, as they would be getting one of the best big men in the league. Towns can play inside and stretch the floor when needed with his ability to shoot from beyond the arc.
Towns is on his $220M contract with the Knicks. If the NBA champion doesn’t use his player option, the Warriors will try to make sure it happens. This would give some urgency to Steph Curry’s last title run
