Warriors' Steph Curry may retire earlier than expected after contract details are revealed

The Golden State Warriors have had their sights set on getting a contract extension done with Steph Curry as the offseason has gone on. Many were wondering what the holdup was between the two sides, especially with Curry being the biggest player in franchise history.

Curry has been very vocal over the last few weeks, making it clear that he wants to stay in Golden State. Retirement has also been a question, but he has made it clear that he is focused on the next two years.

“No. No. There’s a sense of urgency to capitalize on these next two years and see where it takes you. That’s kind of the strategy right now,” Curry said.

Curry still has a few years left on his contract, but it is just a matter of whether he will fulfill the entirety of it. Many expect him to at least play 20 seasons before retiring after his contract extension was made official.

“The 38-year-old Curry will complete a $62.6 million extension he signed for the 2026-27 season in August 2024 before the new contract takes him through 2029 — which would be his 20th season,” AP’s Janie Mccauley wrote.

However, there is a little caveat in the contract extension that Curry signed on Friday night. The four-time champion has a player option for the 2028-29 season.

“Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has agreed to a two-year, $116 million contract extension, tying the franchise legend to the only organization he has ever known through his 20th NBA season, league sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Friday. The deal includes a player option in the final season (2028-29), according to sources,” ESPN’s Anthony Slater wrote.

After the 2027-28 season, if Curry decides to call it quits, he can do so. Many believe he will make it to his 20th season, but the player option gives him the ability to make a decision after the 2027-28 campaign.

Curry fulfilling the entirety of his contract, including his player option, remains to be seen. However, there are only two confirmed years left on his contract. Curry will now have the option to retire after two years rather than three.
